Annabel – Glossop’s next top model

Spanish-born Podenco hunting dog Annabel, has won Victoria Vet’s competition to become the new face of the practice. She will now front their vaccination reminder campaign, which encourages local dog owners to make sure that their dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date.

Annabel’s story is a true tale of triumph over adversity; she is a very special dog with an indomitable spirit. She was discovered by local lady Valerie Wood in a log yard in Spain, struggling to survive in the cold winter, nothing more than a skeleton and to Valerie’s horror was providing for her young pup. Not only this, but she suffered from misshapen front legs which affected her ability to walk.

Valerie took in both mum and her pup, Annabel underwent surgery to correct her more misshapen front leg. Her pup Corky found a new home with Valerie’s friends, and, helped by the care provided to her by Valerie and her family, Annabel’s personality began to develop.

Valerie said: “When we moved back to Glossop from Spain three years ago she adapted really well and now she loves being in the UK. She was very nervous to begin with but as she bonded with me her cheeky nature became evident. She is a very happy and comical dog and a joy to be around. We are delighted she has won, after all the difficulties she has been through it’s wonderful that so many local people voted, we are very proud of her and love her to bits.”

Head nurse Rachel Short commented: “Annabel is a lovely dog and a worthy winner. She has not had an easy life but her spirit and energy have carried her through. Thanks to Valerie she is now having a wonderful life and it could have ended so differently had she not found her.”
